The sun had set. A driving rain danced off the marshal’s head, muddying soft earth. He tried not to think of how tired he was, or of rest or sleep, and fought to focus on the task at hand. There was the sound of boots and horses’ hooves.

“Evening, Marshal.” Reggie appeared from the stables with a horse in tow. Four others stood already hitched to a long rail running parallel to the side of the barn.

“Evening, Reggie. Where’s Caleb?”

“Inside. Do you need him? He was going to come out, but I told him to stay warm. The rain was unexpected.” Reggie tethered the fifth mount to the rail.

“No. Let him stay dry.”

“They don’t like the thunder. But they’re mostly settled now.” The young groom cocked an ear toward the sound of footsteps. They grew louder and more steady as members of the royal guard, followed by Sir Godfrey’s sons, trickled into view. Each carried one or two light sacks.

Carson greeted them, his gaze lingering on the Godfrey twins. Theos had helped the steward meet his end, no question. But Tristan? He could not be certain. Distancing both from the castle until the steward’s death blew over was the right thing to do. Was it not? Am I condoning murder? Dishonoring our king?

There was little talk as the men found their mounts along the rail and fastened their sacks to saddles. A few coarse words rang out, followed by muted laughter. Reggie hurried down the rail, moving from horse to horse, gently stroking the muzzle or cheek of each as he bid them a safe journey.

Carson watched the animals’ breathing, small clouds billowing from their nostrils. He noted that Fereliss, despite the awkward circumstance, took time to speak with the young groom.

“Marshal!” called a voice from behind.

Carson spun, wiping the rain from his eyes as Major Stronghart lumbered into view. “What is it?” he shouted.

“There’s two more dead in Fostead! And Rolft’s been spotted, Marshal!”

Carson swore before addressing the mounted search party, the rain beating down on him. “Gentlemen! Find the Prince of Quills! Put him in chains! Bring him here to me!”
